Back-to-school with Asthma

As you head back to school, there are several things you can do. Below are forms, guidelines and suggestions to help parents, students and schools make a smoother transition together.

  • Asthma Action Plan (Espanol): Ask your doctor for a written Asthma Action Plan for the school. This plan should include what medicine to use to treat asthma symptoms and changes in peak flow zones, what medication to use as a pretreatment before exercise, emergency telephone numbers and a list of things that make your child's asthma worse.
  • Winning With Asthma - Invite your student's athletic coaches, PE teachers and referees to take the free 25-minute online asthma educational program.
  • Check your child's medical charts to ensure their flu shots are up-to-date. UDOH Immunization Program.

  • Plan a meeting with school staff (school nurse, teacher and physical education teacher) before school starts to review the Asthma Action Plan, use of the peak flow meter, medicines and things (triggers) that make your child's asthma worse.
  • Keep in touch. Continue talking with your child and school staff about managing asthma at school on a regular basis, even if everything is fine at school. Talk with the school staff if your child misses school and assignments.
