What is the Utah Health Story Bank?

The Utah Health Story Bank is a project of the Utah Department of Health (UDOH). It is a database of health-related stories, contact information, and other details from Utahns who wish to share their experiences with others. The stories are collected under strict confidentiality. Details and contact information are shared only with the permission of the individual and then only with UDOH staff and/or media organizations who agree to respect the privacy of each individual.

Why does the Utah Department of Health collect stories?

The UDOH collects stories to put a face on today's health issues. Too often, health issues are talked about in dollars and cents and the real people affected are forgotten. Real people, and their stories, not only put a face on the issue, but also help simplify complex issues for the public. By submitting a story, you may help increase awareness and promote better health in the community.

How are the stories used?

  • To meet the request from reporters working on health-related stories who need real people to interview.
  • To show the Utah Legislature the importance of health as they prepare Utah's state budget.
  • To create health media messages.
  • For educational activities such as presentations to community groups, fact sheets and brochures, and on web sites to promote healthy living.
When someone in the story bank matches a request from a reporter, lobbyist or health educator, the person is contacted to see if he or she is willing to speak about his or her health-related story. If they are willing, their contact information is provided to the reporter, lobbyist, or health educator.

Your story will never be shared without your permission, and you will not be asked to participate in any activities that might make you uncomfortable.
