Bureau News

The annual Bureau retreat is October 27th at the State Library for the Blind from 1:30-4:30 PM.

Food this year is Potluck Style with the theme - fire, earth, wind, and water.  Examples: fire - something spicy or heated | earth - potatoes or some other root vegetable that comes from the ground | wind - something fluffy or whipped | water - soup.  Please bring something healthy that could fit into one of these categories and that can feed 6-8 people.  There is a sign up sheet by the water cooler/fruit basket.  Be creative!  We look forward to trying out all of your creations!

Community

  • We will have a booth at the Senior Expo on Oct 10th and 11th at the South Towne Expo Center.

Data/Surveillance

  • Randy completed a draft of a fact sheet describing inpatient hospitalizations for children 0-17 years-of-age during calendar year 2006 and one for general arthritis hospitalizations.
  • Randy prepared a draft of an Arthritis Resource Guide to be presented to physicians practicing Geriatrics and Rheumatology in Utah
  • Randy completed a rough draft of the 2008 Burden Report using 2005 and 2007 data, Nicole has reviewed it and Randy is revising.

Media

  • Spanish Radio Campaign began on  September 8, 2008 and will run until Nov 2008. The campaign will emphasize the need for people with arthritis to move/exercise their joints. Print materials accompany the radio ads and have been placed in Spanish businesses.

Communities

  • Two community mini-grants were awarded to Utah County Health Department and U of U Department of Pediatrics. The Utah County project focuses on asthma education among the Hispanic and WIC population and creating an Asthma Coalition. The U project will continue to educate the homeless population and  work on institutionalizing the educational efforts.

Health Systems

  • The Asthma Program epidemiologist and the Environmental Epidemiology Program developed two new views in IBIS for the asthma hospitalization and ED encounter indicators.  They include asthma hospitalizations and ED encounter rates by county and the average number of daily hospitalizations and ED encounters by month.  The new views will be published to the web shortly.
  • The emergency room discharge materials have been completed. We are now recruiting emergency rooms to pilot the program.

Media

  • A Check Your Health segment was filmed highlighting Winning with Asthma. Ali Martin provided an overview of the program and a coach who participated explained his experiences and how the program helped him deal with asthma among his players. It will air Friday, October 24 at 4:55 and 8:55 AM.

  • In partnership with Baby Your Baby, Tobacco Program, Pregnancy Risk Line, WIC, and the Bureau of Maternal Health, began work on collaborative initiatives to improve the health of first time mothers and new parents.
  • The UDOH Preconception Health Workgroup was awarded a HHS Grant for $1 million over two years. The money is to expand and enhance an existing social marketing program, namely Baby Your Baby. The workgroup has already begun working on the first project – a Folic Acid education campaign and vitamin giveaway for WIC clients.
  • Marie attended the annual WIC conference September 17 to provide information on the Baby Your Baby Program encouraging referrals to the program and use of the Keepsake and newsletters  The Cook’s Companion was also shared with all attendees.

In June 2008, the Utah Department of Health's Cancer Program (UCCP) received funding from the Center's for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to implement the Well-Integrated Screening and Evaluation for Women Across the Nation (WISEWOMAN) program in Utah. The program is designed to offer additional screening services to be offered during a regularly scheduled breast and cervical cancer screening appointment. Services include: Blood pressure testing, Cholesterol testing, Sugar/glucose testing, Height and weight measurements, One-on-one health counseling and coaching, nutrition and physical activity resources, and treatment referral. Utah's WISEWOMAN program will be called UCCP BeWise and Kalynn Filion is the coordinator.

Media

  • Comprehensive Cancer staff met with Love Communications about producing an Ovarian Cancer DVD. The DVD will include information on screening and treatment for healthcare providers and will be eligible for Utah Medical Association credits.
  • The UCAN Quality of Life Work Group held the 2nd Annual Cancer Survivorship Day. Over 160 cancer survivors and their family members came together for a day that included, activities of the kids, educational breakouts by local cancer specialists and physicians, a panel of cancer survivors, and keynote speaker, Scott Burton, cancer survivor and comedian.

Each Thursday at 12:50 p.m., Mary Nickles interviews CYH experts from UDOH and IHC.  The health and nutrition topics are designed to appeal to an older audience, which view the noon news.  Upcoming topics are:

  • The application for continued funding for the Chronic Disease Genomics Program was unsuccessful. The program ends it activities on September 30th with the final report to be submitted to CDC within 90 days.
  • The Genomics Web site and the resources available there will continue to be active until further notice.

Health Systems

  • The Utah Nurses Association approved the Bureau of Health Promotion as an Approved Provider of continuing nursing education programs on September 5.  Our status as an Approved Provider will be good from October 2008-2011.  This approval grants any program in the Bureau to be able to offer continuing education credits for nurses.  As part of this Bureau partnership, the Diabetes Program developed the policies/procedures and completed and submitted the renewal application.

  • Grant S. met with Smith’s Pharmacies and Letter 23 (media organization) to continue developing plans for World Diabetes Day and the concurrent A1c awareness campaign on Nov. 13-15. Pfizer and Abbott pharmaceuticals have volunteered educational materials and advertising funding, respectively. Select Smith’s pharmacies will also be hosting A1c screenings during the campaign with pharmacy students conducting the screenings.
  • Grant S. and Darin L. assisted Letter 23 during a filming of an 8-part series of diabetes educational videos featuring local certified diabetes educator, Ginny Burns. Once the videos are finalized, they will be part of the Ask Ginny campaign, distributed virally (YouTube, etc…), made into a DVD to be used by certified diabetes educators, and hosted on the DPCP and KUTV’s Web sites. The Ask Ginny campaign also has a new home at http://health.utah.gov/diabetes/askginny/.

Projects & Upcoming Events

  • In partnership with the University of Utah, AUCH, and Community Health Centers, the Utah Diabetes Prevention and Control Program is developing a conference on Diabetes in Women targeting clinical providers, educators, and public health practitioners.  The all-day conference will be held April 24, at the Larry Miller campus of SLCC.   • We are updating the testing session handouts and brochures based on feedback from the staff and participants.
  • Advertised Green Planet Wellness at the WIC Conference and sent a mass message to all active accounts in myHealthyUtah.
  • Developing Smokeout Challenge content and materials and will start advertising Oct. 1st, or as soon as flyers are finalized.

Communities

  • Smith’s pharmacy has offered to do teaching to customers who fill a medication prescription to lower blood pressure. Smith’s has hired a person to be in charge of this program and is moving ahead quickly. Education protocols and evaluation methods are in development.

Gold Medal Schools

  • McMillan Elementary was selected as the September GMS of the month.
  • Morgan Elementary joined GMS! This is the first GMS in the Morgan School District!

Media

  • A meeting to discuss the focus group guide with Rick Kagel, focus group facilitator, was held on September 4, 2008. Minor changes were made. A total of three focus groups were held to review current campaign materials and gain insight into target population knowledge and beliefs on 9/8/08 and 9/9/08.

Projects & Upcoming Events

  • Julie, Jessica and Sarah will be traveling around the state in October to conduct the Policy Training for new mentors and the GMS Late Annual training to schools who signed up late or who did not attend the Annual training.
  • MaryCatherine will be presenting on heart failure and stroke in Utah at the Pursuit of Clinical Excellence conference on October 17, 2008.
  • Presentation on stroke campaign’s focus groups results will be done in the first couple of weeks of October.
  • Secondary team will be meeting with CDC representatives during Oct.14-15.
  • ACHU Forum will be held October 16, 2008 at the University Guest House.
  • GWTG-HF kick off conference will be held on Friday October 17, 2008 at the University of Utah Marriott.

Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Obesity Program

Nutrition/Fruits & Veggies-More Matters®  

  • Patrice trained grocery store tour guides for Smith’s, Wal-Mart and Associated Food Stores on the new Fruits & Veggies—More Matters grocery store tour script for the 2008-2009 school year. Patrice compiled new educational materials for participating third grade classrooms and sent updated materials to participating local health departments.
  • Patrice presented and exhibited on Fruits & Veggies—More Matters at the State WIC Conference on September 17th. 
  • The fall Fruits and Veggies at School newsletter was distributed to all elementary schools in the state. Wasatch Community Gardens provided an article on school gardening opportunities.

Physical Activity

  • Summit County Health Department administrators invited Lynda Blades, Dr. Sundwall, and Heather Borski to visit the Olympic Park Venue and meet with executives from the Utah Athletic Foundation, the 501c3 which oversees the venue.  Discussion was held regarding future partnership opportunities with our program.  Utah Athletic Foundation representatives were invited to participate in the Utah Partnership for Healthy Weight.

  • On September 11, the A Healthier You Community Awards were presented to 10 communities.  Municipal leaders were present to accept the awards from UDOH at a luncheon at the annual Utah League of Cities and Towns (UlCT) Conference in Salt Lake City.  Also at the ULCT conference, Lynda Blades conducted a round table presentation on the A Healthier You Community Awards.  Additional communities expressed intent to apply for the awards in future years based on the information presented at the round table.

  • Prizes are being mailed out to participants of the “Walk in the Park” program which ended on Labor Day.

Data/Surveillance

  • The four-page summary of the 2008 children’s height weight data is complete.  A distribution plan for the report is being discussed.

Media

  • PANO staff arranged for a private screening of the independent film “Killer At Large” at the Jordan Commons Megaplex in Sandy.  Thirty-nine representatives from various private and public organizations attended the screening.  Steven Greenstreet, the film’s director was on hand to answer questions.  Steven issued his own press release about the event and Deseret News covered the story which was printed September 29.  UDOH did not do a press release on the event.

Staff

  • Progress has been made in the hiring process for the Epidemiologist/Evaluator and the Physical Activity Coordinator positions.

Communities

  • Partnered with Salt Lake Valley Health Department’s youth group, Teen Advocates Against Tobacco, to encourage a smoke-free State Fair policy to protect workers and patrons from exposure to secondhand smoke.

Health Systems

  • In partnership with the Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program, presented The TRUTH Network materials and other cessation resources to Smith’s pharmacy staff.
  • Met with the Association of Utah Community Health Centers to discuss opportunities for collaboration around tobacco and diabetes issues.

  • Promoted TPCP’s FY08 successes with the media, as contained in TPCP’s eight annual report: http://www.tobaccofreeutah.org/
  • Began recruiting participants for the new adult cessation campaign that will chronicle the effects of tobacco use from the perspective of the tobacco user, a family member, and the person’s doctor.
  • Produced a display for the Body World’s Exhibit, to run through January. The exhibit features tobacco damaged lungs compared to healthy lungs, with Utah Tobacco Quit Line cards and posters, a cigarette depository and a two-minute educational video.

Staff

  • Held annual program strategic planning meeting and began revising the TPCP FY09 strategic plan in preparation for FY10.

Training/Partners

  • Conducted Policy Coordination Meeting with TPCP partners working on worksite, outdoor, school and healthcare policy initiatives around the state.  The training provides an opportunity to share best practices and resources.
  • Conducted Annual Kick-off Training to orient new mini-grantees, network contacts, LHDs, and school districts on TPCP resources, programs and policies.
  • Created a workgroup to develop a collaborative tool to facilitate partners networking and sharing resources. The workgroup distributed a needs assessment to identify the wants and needs of TPCP grantees.

Communities

  • Staff participated in two car seat checkpoints at Wheeler Farm and Richfield, Utah to kickoff National Child Passenger Safety Week and National Car Seat Check Saturday.
  • The Domestic Violence Fatality Review Committee reviewed and made recommendations on four 2006 domestic violence related cases.
  • The Multi-disciplinary Child Fatality Review Committee reviewed and made recommendations on four child fatality cases.

Data/Surveillance

  • Due to population estimate errors from the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget, the 2005 NVDRS Annual Report which was ready for the review process will need to be re-analyzed and revised when the corrected population estimates are available. The decision was made to include both 2005 and 2006 data in a new combined NVDRS report. 

Media 

  • A “More Than Just Numbers” press conference was held on September 11, 2008, regarding the 2007 teen motor vehicle deaths. Lieutenant Governor Herbert spoke at the event as well as three families who lost a teen in a 2007 motor vehicle crash. Media coverage included Fox 13, ABC 4, KPCW, Standard Examiner, Deseret News, SL Tribune, and the Provo Daily Herald. A booklet, “Zero Fatalities: 16 Reasons Why Zero is the Only Acceptable Number,” which contains the stories of 16 teens that died in 2007 was distributed and posted on the VIPP website. Additional plans are underway to use the booklet with schools, community groups, local health departments, and the Don’t Drive Stupid campaign.
  • A “Could Your Child Survive a Car Crash” news release was distributed on September 18, 2008 to highlight various car seat checkpoints during National Child Passenger Safety Week. A TV interview was conducted by staff on KJZZ.
  • Staff spoke at an “Operation Crosswalk Enforcement” press conference conducted by the SLC Police Department.
  • A meeting regarding creation of a marketing plan for Utah Safe Kids was held with Charlotte Marsh of the AdMarsh Agency.

Policy/Legislative

  • TBI fund proposals were reviewed by a review committee and recommendations for funding were submitted to State purchasing. 

Schools

  • Student Injury Report form (SIR) training was provided to 23 new school secretaries. 
  • Staff conducted bicycle helmet observation studies at 12 elementary schools.
  • Staff constructed a page on Facebook to prevent teen dating violence. The page has 6 teenagers listed as friends. Staff will monitor the page and provide updates and information on teen dating violence and the teen dating violence awareness week activities.
