Overview
Diabetes is a serious disease with potentially life-threatening consequences. It is a chronic diseases that can be controlled through
nutrition, physical activity, medication and regular doctor visits.
If you have just been told you have diabetes, your treatment plan
has changed, you are not meeting your diabetes targets, or are pregnant
or thinking about becoming pregnant, you could benefit from taking
a self-management education class.
Diabetes Self-Management Training (DSMT)
will answer these questions for you:
- What is diabetes?
- How do I get my blood sugars down?
- What and how much should I eat?
- What physical activity should I do?
- How and when do I take my prescribed medicine?
- How do I test my blood sugar?
- What do my blood sugar, A1c and lipid numbers mean?
- How do I prevent low blood sugar?
- How do I care for my feet?
- How do I prevent diabetes related problems?
- What do I do when I am sick or traveling?
- How do I deal with stress?
- If I use tobacco, how do I stop?

Learning About Diabetes, Inc., is a non-profit, charitable, educational corporation dedicated to providing patients, caregivers, and health care professionals with:
- Easy-to-read, low literacy, and very low literacy health education programs for all ages
- Culturally sensitive foreign-language programs for those in need of health care information in their native language
- Research on the role of art and design in creating effective health care communications
CLASSES AND SUPPORT GROUPS
Meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month at 7pm. Lecture will be presented first, with support group meeting after. Each month there will be a recipe of the month. All lecture topics will be diabetes related, given by professionals in the field.

Registration is required for group classes and individual consults.
Diabetes Support Group
Session where you can exchange information, feelings and ideas. Groups offer discussion, question and answer sessions, and other activities.
FREE and open to ALL adults in the community, 18 years and older. Spouses and support members are encouraged to also attend.
Every 4 th Tuesday of the month, 6:00 pm - 7:30pm
Gestational Diabetes Class in Spanish and English
The Utah Diabetes Center is accepting all patients. Those without insurance may be covered. Please call for more information.

Granger Professional Pharmacy in West Valley City, UT
- When: November 12th and then the first Thursday of every month after that. Free Introduction to Diabetes class from 5:30 pm-6:30 pm

- What: Introduction to Diabetes class offered for free and opened to all the public
- Why: To help give people additional tools to manage their Diabetes

Starting the first Thursday in Janaury and the first Thursday of each month thereafter, we will be offering our free Introduction to Diabetes class from 5:30 pm-6:30 pm
Starting the first Thursday in February, an additional class for a fee (most insurances can be billed) from 7:00 pm-8:00 pm. In addition- we will also be offerering individual sessions for those who are interested in having 1-on-1 education time.

Free Diabetes Self-Management Course

The University of Utah Rehabilitation and Wellness Clinic offers a 6 week exercise program (12 sessions) for individuals with diabetes and pre-diabetes. Exercise sessions are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-6:00pm. The program is designed to provide a safe, supportive environment that promotes a well-balanced exercise routine. The program emphasizes aerobic, resistance, and flexibility exercises with a focus on appropriate exercise intensity and progression for each individual as well as blood sugar management.
The program includes a pre-exercise consult with Sheldon Smith , MS , CDE. The cost is $100 and a physician's referral is required for participation. Following completion of the class, participants are eligible to enroll in the independent maintenance program. This is ongoing for a monthly fee of $25. Davis County Support Group
The Diabetes Care Centers of Utah at Davis Hospital in Layton Utah sponsors a Diabetes Support Group. The group meets at 7pm for one hour, on the 4th Thursday of the month, (with the exception of November when the group will meet on November 18, 2010, and no meeting will be held in December). In January, the group will continue with the 4th Thursday of each month.

A speaker comes every month to discuss a topic that the participants have indicated they would like to learn about. The topic in November 2010 is "Navigating the Holidays with Diabetes" taught by our certified diabetes educator (CDE). Other sessions will have various physicians and specialists come and discuss eye care, foot care, basic diabetes care etc. Then the group will have discussion during the later half of the meeting. The group facilitator is a licensed social worker who has type 2 diabetes.
Anyone is welcome to attend. There is no cost for anyone. If you would like more information, please call 801-807-7360.
