Lucie Jarrett, MS, APRN, CDE organized and established the Primary Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) Inpatient Diabetes Education Program for newly diagnosed patients and their families.  Ms. Jarrett, in conjunction with Marvin Rallison, MD, organized and established the PCMC Outpatient Diabetes Clinic for the ongoing management and care of children with diabetes.  Ms. Jarrett has been a Certified Diabetes Educator since 1987, and has co-authored articles published in The Diabetes Educator, Diabetes Care, and Western Journal of Medicine.  She has worked with children with diabetes for 37 years and has dealt with all facets of care management and diabetes education.  Ms. Jarrett currently is the Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialist for the Diabetes Clinic & Education Program at Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City.

Oral Health & Diabetes
Steven Steed, DDS

Steven Steed, DDS,  is the Dental Director at the Utah Department of Health, and President of the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors (ASTDD).  Dr. Steed has championed efforts in Utah, as well as nationally, in early detection and prevention of dental disease in children.  He helped to author the ASTDD “Best Practice Approach to School-based Dental Sealant Programs”, which has become the standard of dental sealant prevention programs nationwide.  Dr. Steed works directly with the Utah Dental Association and Utah State Legislature on advancing oral health initiatives.  Dr. Steed organized and oversees the Utah Oral Health Coalition, whose mission is to increase community awareness of oral health needs.  Dr. Steed is also a member of the Utah Diabetes Advisory Board and seeks to provide awareness on the links between oral health conditions and diabetes.  For this program, Dr. Steed will discuss connections between oral health care and diabetes prevention and care. 



JULY

Hyperbaric Medicine

Terri DeJohn, MD

Terri DeJohn, MD spent 25 years in emergency medicine, and subsequently made the shift to wound care and hyperbaric medicine six years ago.  She is a fellow in the American College of Emergency Medicine and is also board certified in Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine. She is currently the Medical Director of the Hyperbaric Medicine and Wound Treatment Center of Utah.  Under her direction, the clinic has achieved wound healing rates better than the national average.  Dr. DeJohn loves to teach and is an adjunct professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Utah. Presentations have included the venues at the International Undersea and Hyperbaric Annual Scientific Assembly and the University of Utah Grand Rounds.

Laura Shane-McWhorter, PharmD, BCPS, FASCP, CDE, BC-ADM is a Clinical Professor at the University of Utah College of Pharmacy in the Department of Pharmacotherapy.  She has more than twenty years of pharmacy experience, and provides diabetes education and care to underserved patients.  She is widely published, including authoring two books on dietary supplements.


SEPTEMBER

Retinopathy

Robert Kwun, MD

Dr Kwun graduated with honors from Harvard University and received his MD from Columbia University, where he was awarded a research fellowship from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and received the McKane Memorial Award for excellence in ophthalmic research.  He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Southern California‑Doheny Eye Institute and his vitreoretinal fellowship at Columbia University.  He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and is a member of many ophthalmic and retina‑related societies.  He was previously the director of the retina‑vitreous clinic at Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center, and he has been working as a partner with Retina Associates of Utah for over 10 years, which has four offices in the Intermountain Region.  Dr Kwun has been listed in Best Doctors in America for the 10 years he has been in Utah.

Low income clinics & resources in Utah:

Cory Page obtained a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Southern Nevada in 2004.  After graduation, he worked for three years in retail pharmacy for Albertson’s Pharmacy, where he was certified to immunize and run basic laboratory tests such as TSH, lipid profiles, A1C, and PSA screening.  In 2007, he began working with an inpatient Glucose Management Team at Intermountain Healthcare’s Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.  Cory is the point person on his team for working with patients on applying for patient assistance programs or searching for other resources.  For this program, Cory will review resources that can provide cost saving measures for the uninsured, underserved and rural patient.
