Utah Injury Reporting Rule

Utah has established a surveillance and reporting system for major injuries that occur throughout the state.  The Utah Administrative Code, under authority of Sections 26-1-30 and 26-6-3, adopted the R386-703 Injury Reporting Rule. The purpose of the rule is to identify causes of major injury that may be reduced or eliminated, thereby reducing morbidity and mortality. Injuries constitute a leading cause of death and disability in Utah and therefore pose an important risk to public health. “Injury” is defined by R386-703 as, bodily damage resulting from exposure to physical agents such as mechanical energy, thermal energy, ionizing radiation, or chemicals, or resulting from the deprivation of basic environmental requirements such as oxygen or heat. Mechanical energy injuries include acceleration and deceleration injuries, blunt trauma, and penetrating wound injuries.

The following chart shows those injuries to be of concern to the public’s health as stated by the Utah Department of Health. The injuries are listed with their International Classification of Disease and Related Health Problems (ICD) coding with the corresponding conversion from ICD-9 to ICD-10.Please see R386-703 Injury Reporting Rule, for further information on reporting requirements, special investigations of injury, confidentiality of reports and penalties.
