Chlorine Alternatives

The Utah Department of Health’s Environmental Epidemiology Program participates in the National Toxic Substance Incidents Program (NTSIP), which is funded by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). NTSIP contributes to the nationwide collection and analysis of chemical spills. In addition to this critical surveillance, NTSIP promotes outreach to prevent future hazardous chemical spills. To this end, NTSIP encourages safer chemical alternatives. Utah NTSIP has chosen to focus on chlorine disinfection.

Chlorine Alternative Resources

Sodium Hypochlorite

Sodium hypochlorite is safer to handle than gaseous chlorine, and can be generated and stored on site. It can be generated from sodium hydroxide and chlorine, or it can be generated electrolytically from brine. Sodium hypochlorite can be manufactured on site, or it can be purchased in liquid form generally containing 3 to 15 percent available chlorine. It produces a free chlorine residual, and forms chloramines and chlorophenols. Click here for more information.

Wastewater Facility Maps

Using Geographic Information Systmes (GIS) technology, NTSIP mapped the location of chlorine-using wastewater treatment facilities in the five highest populated Utah counties: Salt Lake, Utah, Davis, Weber and Washington Counties. Among these twenty locations, four elderly care facilities, 28 schools (including 11 elementary and seven high schools), and over 15,000 homes are within one mile of a facility.
