While still in operation, or prior to a seizure, there is a high risk for acute exposure to harmful chemicals in meth labs. If you discover a working meth lab, do not attempt to enter. Contact your local law enforcement agency immediately. Many of the chemicals used in the “cooking” process can be harmful. After the bust and seizure of a meth lab there is often only a low exposure risk to chemical residue, but this residue needs to be properly cleaned up (refer to decontamination standard rule). Exposure to meth residues may cause symptoms similar to those experienced by actual meth users. The potential health effects depend on the specific chemical to which a person is exposed, how much of the chemical is present at the property, length of the exposure, and the health condition of the person being exposed
The chemicals found in meth labs may cause:
- harm to the: heart, immune system, respiratory system, and neurological system
- short-term or permanent brain damage
- developmental and growth problems in children and teens
- internal and external chemical burns
- cancer
- death
