Petrochem Recycling Corporation/EKOTEK

Introduction:
The Petrochem Recycling Corporation/Ekotek site covers about seven acres at 1628 North Chicago Street in northern Salt Lake City. It lies in a mainly industrial area between Interstate 15 on the west and the Wasatch Mountains on the east. Some 50 homes sit immediately south of the site. A railroad right-of-way divides the site into eastern and western portions. Hundreds of companies sent oil used for recycling to the plant from the five surrounding states.

The Petrochem/Ekotek site was operated by several owners as a refinery from 1953 until 1978 and as a hazardous waste storage/treatment facility and a petroleum recycling facility from 1978 through 1988. Removal of essentially all petroleum products and hazardous wastes in tanks and drums was accomplished from 1988 to 1991.

The site was added to the National Priorities List (NPL) in October 1992.

Documents:
A Public Health Assessment (PHA) was conducted for the smelter site. The PHA was completed in 1993.
