In September 2009, Utah received funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to support activities outlined in the Health and Human Services Action Plan to Prevent Healthcare Associated Infections.

The Utah HAI State plan is divided into the following sections:

• Infrastructure Goals
• Surveillance, Detection, Reporting and Response Goals
• Prevention Goals
• Evaluation and Communication Goals

Reports are made quarterly to the federal government to update them of progress made in fulfilling goals in Utah's plan. In addition to quarterly reporting, the UDOH created a HAI Team which meets monthly. The team covers each section of the plan and discusses progress made in goals for each quarter.
