Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) refers to an infection of the uterus and other reproductive organs that cause symptoms such as lower abdominal pain. It is a serious complication of some sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), especially chlamydia and gonorrhea. PID can lead to serious consequences, including infertility.
While symptoms can vary from mild to severe, PID often goes unrecognized by women and their healthcare providers due to vague symptoms. Other signs and symptoms to look for include fever, painful urination and irregular menstrual bleeding.
