2007 Tularemia Cluster in Utah

Summary of the 2007 Tularemia Cluster

The Utah Dept of Health, with Salt Lake County, Utah County, Weber/Morgan, and Southwest Health Department(s) in 2007 investigated tularemia illness cluster associated with outdoor exposure on the west side of Utah Lake.  The common symptoms experienced by ill cases were fever, body aches, flu-like symptoms, and skin lesion with tender lymph nodes. All had outdoor exposure west of Utah Lake, between June 13 and July 3, 2007, and illness onsets between June 14 and July 5.  Tularemia cases have occurred after exposure in this area in past years. Cases reported many deer fly bites. All evidence currently available suggests this is a naturally occurring cluster.
