The best way to prevent influenza is to receive the flu vaccine. For the 2009-2010 influenza season this includes getting the regular seasonal flu vaccine and the 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine (when it becomes available).
To find a location near you where the influenza vaccine is available visit the Utah Flu Vaccine Locator
There are other important actions you can take to protect yourself and others. These includes:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Cover your nose and mouth with your elbow when coughting or sneeszing, not your hands.
- Wash your hands with soap and water often, especially after coughing or sneezing. If water and soap are not available an alcohol-based gel can be effective. (watch handwashing video)
- Avoid touching your eves, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Avoid close contact with sick people.
- Stay home if you are sick with flu-like symptoms. It is recommended to stay home for at least 24 hours after fever is gone (your fever should be gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine).
