Highlights
Haemophilus
influenzae
The Office of Epidemiology participated in the investigation of
3 Haemophilus influenzae-infected cases in Utah. All necessary
contacts were contacted by local health departments and given prophylactic
treatment.
Infant
Botulism
A confirmed case of infant
botulism was reported to the Office of Epidemiology in April. The
state laboratory reported that the child's stool was positive for
botulinum toxin type A. The California Infant Botulism program released
botulism immunoglobulin for the child's treatment.
Influenza
Only 24 suspect cases of influenza were reported to the Office of
Epidemiology in April 2004, less than one-third the number (85)
of suspect and confirmed cases reported during April 2003. The decrease
in cases is likely due to an earlier influenza season this year
compared to the 2002-2003 season. The peak of the 2002-2003 influenza
season occurred in February 2003, while the peak of the 2003-2004
influenza season occurred in December 2003.
Meningoccal
Disease
The Office of Epidemiology, in conjuction with the Salt Lake
Valley Health Department, participated in the investigation and
management of a meningococcal case in a Salt Lake County resident.
There were 35 total contacts identified that had an exposure warranting
treatment with post-exposure prophylactic medication. All contacts
that could be located were treated and the patient made a full recovery.
The total
number of confirmed and suspect cases for selected diseases, reported
by Utah health
districts, is provided below (Table 1

names in Table 1 to access their corresponding fact sheets. Click
