Highlights
Hepatitis
A
The number of reported suspect and confirmed hepatitis A infections
during August was lower than expected. Seventeen suspect and confirmed
cases have been reported, on average, during the month of August
(according to 5-year historical data). In 2004, however, only 4
suspect and confirmed cases were reported during the month. Click

for more hepatitis A information.
Pertussis
The number of reported suspect and confirmed pertussis, or "whooping
cough", cases showed a statistically significant increase for
the month. Fifty-four suspect and confirmed cases were reported
during August, more than double the statistically expected amount
(25). Click here
for additional pertussis information.
Salmonellosis
Like hepatitis A infections, the number of reported suspect and
confirmed Salmonella infections reported during August
was lower than expected. Fifty-seven suspect and confirmed cases
have been reported, on average, during the month of August (based
upon 5-year historical data). In 2004, however, only 16 cases were
reported during the month. Click here

Viral Meningitis
The number of reported viral meningitis cases was also elevated
for August. While no more than 21 cases would statistically be expected
to be reported during the month, 33 cases were reported. Seventy-six
percent (25) of the reported infections were due to enteroviral
infections. No etiologic agent was identified for the remaining
8 cases of viral meningitis. Click here

West Nile Virus
Six human West Nile virus infections have been reported in Utah
during 2004. Non-human infectivity has also been reported in sentinel
chickens, horses, mosquitoes, and birds. Two percent (7/360) of
sentinel chickens, 7% (3/46) of horses, 2% (52/3,000) of mosquito
batches, and 2% (2/82) of dead birds tested have been positive for
the virus, year-to-date. Click here
