Monthly Morbidity Report

February 2004

Highlights

Giardiasis
There was a 38% reduction in the number of giardiasis cases (23) reported in February 2004 compared to the 37 cases reported during the same time period in 2003.

Influenza
The peak of the 2002-2003 influenza season occurred in February 2003 with 136 confirmed cases reported during the month. In contrast, the peak of the 2003-2004 influenza season occurred in December 2003. The reporting of confirmed influenza cases reported since the beginning of 2004 has been very sporadic with only 3 confirmed influenza cases reported to the Office of Epidemiology during February 2004.

Salmonellosis
Fifty percent more salmonellosis cases (15) were reported in February 2004 campared to 10 reported during February 2003. Some of the strains isolated from laboratory specimens have been genetically identical, but further investigation is needed to make epidemiologic links.

The total number of confirmed cases for 20 selected diseases, reported by Utah health districts, is provided below (Table 1 and Figure 1).
