Monthly Morbidity Report

March 2004

Highlights

Influenza
The number of reported cases of influenza and flu-like illness continued to decrease during March. During the month, 56 cases of influenza were reported, less than half the number of cases of influenza that were reported the preceding month. By comparison, 5 times as many influenza cases were reported during March 2003. The difference can be accounted for by the early arrival of influenza during the 2003-2004 season, as compared to a late arriving influenza during the 2002-2003 season. During the 2003-2004 season, reported cases of influenza peaked in December 2003. In contrast the 2002-2003 influenza season peaked in February 2003.

Pneumococcal Disease
A pediatric death resulting from a Streptococcus pneumoniae infection was investigated. The patient had been vaccinated; therefore, specimens were forwarded to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for further analysis as is required in cases of illness associated with vaccine failure.

Rubella
One confirmed rubella case was identified in a Salt Lake County resident. The patient declined further medical or public health evaluation or follow-up.

The total number of confirmed cases for 20 selected diseases, reported by Utah health districts, is provided below (Table 1 and Figure 1).
