Utah Infectious Disease Summary

October 2004

Highlights

Enterohemorrhagic E.coli (EHEC) Infections
Four E. coli O121:H19 infections were reported during October. A point source for these cases was notidentified. Nine cases of E. coli O157:H7 also occurred in health districts throughout the state. The majority (5) of cases were between the ages of 30 and 39. Six of the cases were female, while three were male. No connection was established between these cases. Click here for more information on EHEC infections.

Pertussis
The number of reported pertussis ("whooping cough") cases has continued to be reported in numbers greater than those expected. During October, 33 cases were reported, primarily from along the Wasatch Front and Southwest Utah. Seventeen of the cases are between the ages of 10 and 29. One case was reported in a child less than one-year of age. Click here for more information on pertussis.

The total number of confirmed and suspect cases for selected diseases, reported by Utah health districts, is provided below (Table 1 and Figure 1).
