Utah Public Health Lab

Monthly Infectious Disease Summary, Utah, January 2005

Highlights

Influenza
Most influenza cases have been reported from along the Wasatch Front. There have been roughly equal numbers of influenza A and influenza B reported throughout the state. Approximately half of all reported cases have occurred in children less than 18 years of age. In addition to collecting influenza case reports, public health has other ways to determine if influenza is in the community. This week, the number of patients with influenza-like illnesses seen at sentinel clinics was elevated for the fourth week in a row. Click here for more information about influenza.

Pertussis
The number of reported pertussis cases reported continues to be higher than expected, especially from along the Wasatch Front. Similar trends have been noted across the country. In the United States, epidemics occur every 3-5 years. An overall increase in the number of cases has been observed since 1990, with a disproportionate increase in disease among adolescents and adults. Click here for more information about the disease.

The total number of confirmed and suspect cases for selected diseases, reported by Utah health districts, is provided below (Table 1 and Figure 1).
