How are the rates caculated ?

The crude hospitalization rate is caculated as follows:

Differences in hospitalization rates between counties are partly due to their differences in age-sex composition. Age-sex adjustment converts a crude rate of a county into what its value would be if the county had the same age-sex composition as that of the standard population (1990 Utah census population). Age-sex adjusted rate is caluculated as follows:
