Bountiful Junior High School is going for the gold! Since this will be its third year participating, the school is reaching new levels and expanding the program.
This year, the Power-Up committee hosted a school wide art contest. Students could create any type of art that exemplified eating healthy, being active, or staying tobacco free. The Power-Up committee met together and judged the art work. Prizes were awarded as follows:
1st Place: Alexis Rausch
2nd Place: Katelyn Curtis
3rd Place: Melissa Christophe/Amy Phelps (tied)
Each winner received a cash incentive. Contestants also received extra credit points in some classes for participating. Bountiful Junior had about 40 entries. Even though, the Power-Up Committee members couldn’t create an admission for the contest, they did a little artwork themselves. Each committee member designed a Power-Up shirt that they wear during activities sponsored by the group.
Tobacco prevention doesn’t stop with the art contest. Bountiful Junior is continuing the focus throughout the school year with an emphasis on parents and the community. During October, Davis County Health Department staff held a tobacco free pledge during Parent Teacher Conferences. In December, community members will be educated about available cessation services at the upcoming Christmas Choir concert. The Power- Up Committee will host a booth at the event and has made arrangements for The Utah Tobacco Quit Line and Utah QuitNet information to be printed on the concert program. Tobacco prevention and cessation information can also be found in the school newsletter.
At the end of the school year, the Power-Up Committee will also be holding a school wide walk/run. This is unique to others runs because it is done during school hours and involves the entire student body. This is the first year that the Power-Up Committee has been responsible for the event. It is a huge undertaking, but sure to be a success. |
