Medicaid for Children in Foster Care

Children who are in the custody of the State of Utah may qualify for health care coverage under Medicaid or State medical assistance. Children may be in the custody of the Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS), or the Division of Youth Corrections (DYC).  Proof of custody is provided by the Foster Care worker in the form of a court order.

Custody Medical Program

The Custody Medical Care Program is a state-funded program which pays medical bills for a child  placed in the custody of the State.  It does not matter if the child has not yet been determined eligible for Medicaid or may not be eligible for Medicaid. The program pays for services not covered by Medicaid and for services from a provider who may not be a current Medicaid provider.  For more information, please refer to SECTION 1 of the Utah Medicaid Provider Manual, Chapter 4 - 4, Custody Medical Care Program.
