What causes the condition?
An inherited abnormality in the structure of hemoglobin in red blood cells

How often does it occur?
One in 3,000 newborns

What happens if it's not found and treated?
Children could have a range of problems; from mild anemia to a life-threatening crisis

How is it treated?
Some will just need education. Some may need special clinical care.
