Sun Safety
Remember these three words: slip, slop, slap

  • Slip on pants and a long-sleeved shirt to protect your skin from the sun
  • Slop on some sunscreen - Use sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Put on sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside. Put more on every few hours, and always use more after swimming or sweating, even if it says "water resistant" or "sweat resistant." Also, use sunscreens that protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Slap on a hat - Look for hats with wide brims to protect your face from the sun.

Also, keep these tips in mind:

  • Try to stay in the shade.
  • Avoid being in the sun when the UV rays are strongest. This is usually between 10:00 am to 4:00 pm daylight savings time.
  • Check the UV index before going outside. This will help you know how strong the UV rays are.
  • Schools are a place where young people can learn important sun safety lessons that can make a lifelong difference. Find out what you can do to Be Sun Smart.

Teacher Appreciation Week
Teachers are an important part of the Gold Medal Schools™ (GMS) program. Without teachers, the policies that have been established would never be put into motion. Teachers support the GMS program, walk the Gold Medal Mile™, implement GMS criteria, and serve as role models to students. This week we would like to thank all of the teachers for the work they do to help students eat healthy, be active, and stay tobacco-free.

World No Tobacco Day
Each year on May 31 World No Tobacco Day is celebrated. This year the World Health Organization (WHO) selected the theme “Tobacco Industry Influence." In 2005 the WHO put into force the first worldwide treaty to set the highest standards of healthy and legal cooperation in tobacco control. Today the world needs this treaty more than it did when it was created. This year more than 5 million people will die from a tobacco-related heart attack, stroke, cancer, lung ailment, or other disease. That does not include the 600,000 people who will die from second-hand smoke. Here are some of the obligations that are included in the WHO treaty:

  • Adopt price and tax measures to reduce demand for tobacco
  • Regulate contents of tobacco products
  • Warn people about the dangers of tobacco
  • Ban sale to and by minors
  • Offer people help to end their addictions to tobacco
