Winter exposure health risks include: cold temperatures, dehydration, and reflective sun.

A strong wind (wind chill) can cause you to lose heat much more quickly and can lead to serious hypothermia. Dress in windproof, waterproof, and heat retaining layers, cover your head, wear gloves or mittens, and wear waterproof footwear. Drinking plenty of fluids and eating frequently can also reduce the risk of hypothermia.

Remember, the weather can change suddenly. If severe weather hits, or if there is heavy traffic, you may be stuck outside in winter conditions for long periods of time.

Even in the winter it is important to remember that Utah is located in a high desert. Humidity is low and dehydration can be a problem, especially when combined with cold, altitude, and physical activity. Symptoms of dehydration include weakness, fatigue, dizziness, and an increased chance for frostbite. Remember: If you feel thirsty you may already be dehydrated.

Apply sunscreen and wear sunglasses and hats with brims to protect yourself from the sun.
