We hosted the Colossal Colon® April 1 through April 8, 2005
The future home of The Children’s Museum at the Gateway
Between 100 South & South Temple on Rio Grande Street
The Colossal Colon® is an incredibly life-like 40-foot long, 4-foot high replica of a human colon you can crawl through, or look through the viewing windows, to see healthy colon tissue, colon disease, polyps, and cancer. It is free. For children, there were educational activities that relate to science and health curriculums. Polyp Man made a surprise visit. For adults, there were health professionals to answer questions about colon health and colon cancer screenings, as well as other cancer-related issues.
5,000 people came to see the Colossal Colon® while it was in Salt Lake City. Seventy-five (75) volunteers worked over seven days. They listened good-naturedly to many jokes. They helped people address their fears of getting screened and heard numerous stories of being diagnosed.
