Can cervical cancer be prevented?

Cervical cancer can be prevented by making sure to protect against a Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Right now, there are two vaccines that protect against the types of HPV most likely to cause cervical cancer. Using condoms and avoiding contact with other infected areas of skin can also prevent an HPV infection.

It is important for women to have regular pap tests to find out if they have a HPV infection or any precancerous lesions. Precancerous lesions can be treated before they turn in to cancer.
