What causes cervical cancer?

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is believed to be the main cause of cervical cancer. HPV is linked to 99.7% of cervical cancers. Women with HPV infections may develop areas of tissue (called precancerous lesions) which may then become cancerous. It is important to know that many women infected with HPV never develop cervical cancer. It is important for women to have regular pap tests to find out if they have HPV and any precancerous lesions or cervical cancer.

Other risk factors for cervical cancer include:

  • Smoking
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Chlamydia infection
  • HIV infection
  • Diet
  • Young age at first full-term pregnancy
