The HPV vaccine protects against infections of Human Papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is the virus believed to be the main risk factor for cervical cancer. Right now there are two HPV vaccines on the market. One protects against HPV 16 and HPV 18, as well as HPV 6 and HPV 11. The other vaccine protects against HPV 16 and HPV 18. HPV 16 and HPV 18 are both types of HPV that are considered high-risk for cervical cancer. HPV 6 and HPV 11 cause warts and are considered low-risk for cervical cancer. These four types of HPV cause 70% of cervical cancers and 90% of genital warts.
It is believed that because the HPV vaccine protects against some cancer-causing forms of HPV, it can prevent some types of cervical cancer.
