What puts me at higher risk for cervical cancer?

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is believed to be the main cause of cervical cancer. Women with HPV infections may develop areas called precancerous lesions which may then become cancerous. Women are at higher risk of getting HPV if they have vaginal, anal, or oral sex with anyone who has genital HPV.

It is important to know that many women infected with HPV never develop cervical cancer. Women need to have regular pap tests to find out if they have HPV and any precancerous lesions or cervical cancer.

Other risk factors for cervical cancer include:

  • Smoking
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Chlamydia infection
  • HIV infection
  • Diet
  • Young age at first full-term pregnancy
