When should I be screened for colon cancer?

Patients should be screened for colon cancer beginning at age 50.  If a patient has a family history of colon cancer or a personal history of other bowel conditions, they should to talk to their doctor to find out when they should be screened.

How often to be screened depends on the type of screening test.  Colonoscopies are only needed once every ten years, while fecal occult blood tests (FOBTs) and sigmoidoscopies are needed more often. Depending on your personal history, your doctor may recommend you get screened more often.
