How is ovarian cancer diagnosed?

A series of ultrasounds, blood tests, and physical exams can be used to look for signs of ovarian cancer. However, the only way to reach a final diagnosis of ovarian cancer is to remove pieces of tumor through surgery. There are two reasons for this first surgery. One is to determine if it is ovarian cancer. The other reason is to find out how far the cancer has spread and remove as many of the tumors as possible.

This surgery should only be done by someone trained to treat ovarian cancer, or who treats several cases of ovarian cancer every year.
