Can pancreatic cancer be prevented?

There are many different things that can increase a person’s risk of pancreatic cancer. Some of these cannot be changed, but others can.

Risk factors that cannot be changed include:

  • Age (over age 60)
  • Race (African American)
  • Family history of gene mutations or other genetic syndromes which make cancer more likely
  • Personal history of pancreatic cancer
  • Family history of pancreatic cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Long-term inflammation of the pancreas

Risk factors that can be changed include:

  • Smoking
  • Obesity
