It's the 2nd leading cancer killer in the United States, after lung cancer. In 2007, an estimated 153,760 new cases of colorectal cancer (cancer of the colon or rectum) will be diagnosed in the U.S., and nearly 52,180 men and women will die of the disease. In Utah, an estimated 740 new cases of colorectal cancer will be diagnosed and 240 Utahns will die from the disease in 2007 (American Cancer Society, Facts and Figures 2007).
Colorectal cancer is most common in men and women aged 50 years and older and the risk increases with age, with 93% of cases diagnosed in people over age 50.
Many cases of colorectal cancer could be prevented if everyone aged 50 and older had regular screening exams.
Screening is the best way to find polyps or growths in the colon or rectum, so they can be removed before they become cancerous. Screening can also find colorectal cancer early, when treatment can be most effective.
Call your doctor today to see if you need to be screened for colon cancer.
