What do I do with medical bills?

Pay attention to the mail you get from your doctor's office. You may get a bill from your doctor's office. If the bill says 'do not pay' or 'your insurance has been billed', you do't have to worry about the bill. If the bill says you owe an amount, you should:

  • make sure doctor's office has a copy of your Medicaid card for the month you are being billed.
  • call our doctor's office and make sure they billed your health plan or the State, whichever one you had for the month you were seen.
  • call the health plan or the State if the bill was sent in but has not been paid.

If you have called your doctor's office and your heath plan or the state and you still have problems, call your HPR.

Don't get stuck with the bill. Be careful of the following things or you could end up paying the medical bills.

  • If you don't get a PCP referral before seeing a specialist.
  • If you see someone who isn't part of your health plan.
  • If you get a service Medicaid doesn't cover and you have signed a form in your doctor's office saying you know it is not a covered servce, but you want the service anyway.
  • For services you receive when you are not eligible for Medicaid.
  • For services you receive during an appeal or hearing that is denied.
