Since 1994, the mission of the Utah Health Data Committee has been “to support health improvement initiatives through the collection, analysis, and public release of health care information.”Part of that mission includes reporting on Utah commercial and Medicaid health plans.
This report contains information about Medicaid Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) health plans, commercial HMOs, and commercial Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs). This is the first year that PPOs have been included in this report and represents a significant expansion of the report’s scope. With the inclusion of PPOs to the other plans, over 50% of Utahns who currently have health insurance are covered by one of the health plans in this report.
The goal of this report is to provide information for consumers, purchasers and insurance plans about the performance of Utah’s commercial HMOs, Medicaid health plans and CHIP HMOs. Consumers and those who purchase health care can use the information to help them make decisions about which plan to choose. Health plans can use the information to assist them in improving the care and services they provide to enrollees.
Data collection, analysis, and writing of this report was a collaborative effort that was lead by the Office of Health Care Statistics The Division of Medicaid and Health Financing, the Utah Health Data Committee, and representatives of the participating Medicaid health plans, HMOs and PPOs contributed to this report.
